“I’ve accidentally deleted few of my messages which I actually wanted to keep. To recover them, I tried but not able to perform the steps to recover deleted mail items Exchange 2010. I know that Microsoft Exchange deleted Items are moved to recoverable items folder or also called dumpster. Don’t know what I am missing to recover those removed emails!!!”

The capability of Exchange 2010 to recover deleted mail items from dumpster within the duration of the retention period, prevents emails and other items being permanently deleted. This is also called ‘Single Item Recovery’.

Solution

Once data moved to dumpster folder, emails remain there until deletion timestamp as per retention periods get over. In case, user forcefully purges mail items, still, the data is retainable.

How to Recover Deleted Items / Purged Emails from Exchange 2010?

The User can opt two methods to recover deleted mail items Exchange 2010.

  1. Using 2 step Manual solution i.e. Search and Recover deleted emails.
  2. Using Exchange Recovery

In this article, I will discuss both methods that user can utilize this to recover Microsoft Exchange 2010 accidentally or maliciously deleted mail items.

Two Step Manual Approach in Exchange 2010 for Recovering Emails

Remember to recover, Single Item Recovery option must be enabled within Exchange 2010 before the accidental purge.

Step1: Using Search-Mailbox search messages

Search-Mailbox cmdlet is used to search email items. Information needed to use it is Mailbox Name, Criteria to Search and Folder where the output will be placed. Let’s perform search operation:

    1. If one has all the above information, it’s time to execute the following command using Powershell::

      Search-Mailbox sec -SearchQuery “from: email sent by username’ AND type the word that message contains” -TargetMailbox “Discovery Search Mailbox” -TargetFolder “Replace This With Foldername” -LogLevel Full

      Next output will be generated with ResultItemsCount & ResultItemsSize.

    2. To Confirm Login OWA and next GOTO on Open Other Mailbox, Select Discovery Search Mailbox and click on Open.
    3. It will navigate to the folder within Discovery Search Mailbox where the user can verify that deleted item has been recovered. But still, it is not restored back to Exchange 2010. Follow Step2 below to restore.

Step 2: Begin Restore Phase

To start Search Mailbox Recovery phase by running Search-Mailbox cmdlet on Exchange 2010 RTM or later version. This will recover deleted mail items Exchange 2010 and restore it back to the user mailbox.

    1. Run the below Shell Command to restore deleted items back to the user mailbox

      Search-Mailbox “Discovery Search Mailbox” -SearchQuery “from:email sent by username’ AND type word that message contain” -TargetMailbox sec -TargetFolder “Recovered by Username” -LogLevel Full -DeleteContent

In the above 2nd Step Solution, first using copying the results to the Discovery Mailbox and next Step copying the results back to the user’s mailbox.
